BLURB
Her fall has just begun. Only his touch can save her from the shift that could destroy it all.

Within my blood runs a thing our kind calls the Shadowing Disease. It shadows over, and bends everything to its will. When the first blood- shift came, it tore through flesh and blood, threatening to bend me, break bone, shatter my mind and entrap my heart with its honeyed, seductive poison. It came with vicious intent, moving my thoughts and altering me forever. The shift has caused a rift within me. No one was safe when it entrapped me in its claws of foul lust. But I have the only antidote against the evil that becomes me - his touch alone has the power to release the spurs of sweet darkness that clung on for dear life. I knew what I had to do; the desperation pulled my mind with the deep determination of a hungry predator. But by the time the revelation raised me from the dark dungeon of my bounds - it might have been too late.

“Fine, I’ll help you, because I can see you’ll never give up on her, and I will never be my own if we don’t.”
“You better believe it,” Robert smirked.
The seven of us stood in thick, dusty, golden sand, huge pieces of rock and debris extruding like tombstones from ash. Battered, bruised and bloody, we watched as the ship disappeared over the huge dunes, our world turning to powder, everything ready to fly away in an escaping breath.

~ Glancing at Maya, it was time to grieve the loss of a mother to us all. Maya’s head hung toward her lap, dark, chocolate hair falling past her face, covering her expression. My sorrow turned to anger. I wanted to go to her, but not yet. What did you say to someone who had just lost a loved one? A mother. I had not earned the right to empathize with such loss. I did not have the words, nor the true emotions, as I had never had such a thing as a mother, I had never experienced anything the way she had. It was clear to me what I was in that moment - a product of the Council. I let the agony of that moment well up inside of me so I can know how not to let it beat me up anymore, and I would fight back.

*****
A body is fragile; it breaks, it tears, and it bleeds; it is also tangible and real, beautiful and rare.
A soul is an ever-fighting, ever-growing entity. It has a mind of its own.
But, a mind is a curse; it can corrupt, be corrupted, think too much, or not enough.
When body meets soul, it’s perfect. It knows the truth, but it cannot live without a mind.
The mind activates the power from the soul to the body.
The balance is never perfect. This is the curse of being broken.
“I was on a lit path, a raging firestorm for him – all of him. My body ached for it. I had found the antidote to my disease, and in those forced images of false memories, I found my salvation, a cure from myself…”

*****

“I know you are there. I can feel you,” I groaned through the darkness.
Silence filled the gloomy room, expanded through the cracks, pushed through thick, gray stone walls, and penetrated the blackness outside.
“You are wasting your time.” But the words escaped in a whisper, my throat so dry it seared.
I felt bruised, inside and out. I tried to lift my body, which seemed to be glued by gravity itself to a cold, hard surface. My wrist stung as I pulled against what felt like barb-wired restraints laced with a poison that left me dizzy. I lay my head back down, trying to catch my breath, sweat clinging to my entire body. A stifling heat choking my vision, my thoughts. The throbbing in my head exploded and rippled through my entire frame. I clenched my teeth, but the pain was too insane to contain. I screamed, and the aching that echoed through my bones, left me icy and shivering. My back lifted and slammed back onto the surface of a metal bed as my breath hit me again. I swore.
“It gets easier with time.” His words filtered through the nothingness inside of me as my heart slowly came back to life.
I swallowed against coals trapped in my throat.
It happened again. The shift was taking me, it ripped and raked over my body. I choked on its blackness.
“Oh, the sin of guilt is an unpleasant thing,” his voice said from right beside me.
I turned my head toward where it was coming from, a tear escaped me. My emotions confined in my esophagus.
“He is going to kill you,” is all I got out, before my eyes closed and I fell into its beckoning midnight.

*****

“Troy?” I called out.
“He’s gone.” A cold voice bounced back.
“What did you do?” I swallowed glass, knowing the man was behind it.
“Oh no, it’s what you did,” he replied, his smug tone sickening.
I tried to lift myself from the hard floor.
“I said, where is Troy?”
“I told you, but for some reason you don’t believe me. He knows what you are, and he is hesitating, wondering if it’s all worth it,” his words like stone grated the inside of my brain to mush.
Liar!” I yelled, pulling against chains.
“You give me way too much credit… Ava.” A slight pause before he said my name, and the way he said it, there was no doubt in my mind who had been responsible for the state I had found myself in.

*****

But before I could get hold of my thoughts, another loud explosion tore through the air, crackling like a beast, our screams becoming lost in the echoes of terror. Loud crashes coming from every direction, enclosing us within its catastrophic claws. Flames so high and wide, we were about to be devoured within the jaws of the fiery creature. I didn’t give myself the time to hesitate for a second longer. I grabbed my two best friends and hurled them down the stairs. The door came crashing in as we hit the bottom floor; Robert and David came tumbling through it, smoke sweltering up behind them. There were no alarms to warn us, which struck me as very odd at first. I waved my hand before my face trying to see through smoke and dust. The fire came from next door and radiated though the walls. I saw the grave expressions on the boys’ faces as they came toward us. I heard girls in the other dorm shriek, cough, cry, and their loud footsteps as they came hurtling down the stairs like mad banshees, pushing against us. I turned to push back, my voice lost in shock and fear.

I grew up in a small northern Minnesotan town married my high school sweetheart, had two beautiful children and as soon as we could we moved to a warmer climate. I have worked with my husband building and decorating custom homes for years. After loving every kind of vampire book, movie and series since I was a child, I decided that I wanted to know more. I can write a book I thought, how hard can that be? Well....it wasn't as easy as I thought, but I stuck to it, and finished my first book Royal Blood Chronicles Book One in August 2009. I now have six books in the series and am about to release book two of my new series Phantom Lives.   My parents always told me that I could do anything that I wanted, work hard, and do it right. I believe that, and live that every day. I started writing this new vampire series for teens and their moms because I wanted something different to read. I was tired of all the modern versions of vampire books, there had to be more to these long lived beings. Where had they been, what had they seen? I wanted, no I NEEDED to know more, so Royal Blood Chronicles was born!  As in Royal Blood Chronicles, Phantom Lives features strong female characters and action and adventure mixed with romance, friendship and a historical backdrop. I hope you enjoy them.

My Review:

Excerpt 2

“I didn’t come here for you, I want Alex,” I shouted in his direction over the howling of the wind that seemed to be picking up.
“Well its not about what you want.  I know that Watcher of yours has you thinking you’re something special, but I don’t quite share his opinions.  You see I’m enjoying being up here, in your realm, and I’ll be damned if some teenage girl is going to take it away now.”
I flinched slightly at the mention of Gabriel.  My heart pulled and I momentarily forgot my mission.  I physically shook my head in order to clear my thought of Gabriel away.  “Not just any teenage girl, a Defender of Heaven,” I tensed and prepared to advance.  Reaching behind me, preparing to pull the weapon I had hid in the waist band of my jeans.
“Ha,” he barked loudly with artificial laughter.  “Like you’re so unique.  The Powers seem to have a thing for teenage girls like you: Ruby Bridges, Irena Sendler, Sacagawea, and that brat Joan of Arc.  I find it a little disturbing their fascination with young girls, but you see my dear you’re just the next in a long line, nothing special.”
He wanted to trade insults, I could play that game as well.  “Well I’d run along and let your Prince face the music.  I’ve already disposed of two of his henchmen and call me crazy they were more threatening than you.  War and Death are scarier, more lethal threats than Famine, sorry its not the 1500s anymore.  Thanks to modern day agriculture and these places called grocery stores you’re a bit of an out dated threat.
He sneered at me, a look of distain on his face, “So literal.  You and all of humanity.  As long as there is greed their will be Famine.  I control the power, I control the resources.  This little financial debacle your country finds itself in, that’s me.  Your welcome!  Freddie Mac and Sallie Mae are my children, my creation.  Wall street is my favorite playground.  And notice who always looses, not the CEOs they’ve sold themselves to me long ago, its the little guy, the middle class.  Ask a family who just had their house foreclosed on after Dad lost his job if Famine is an outdated threat.”
The nausea washed over me.  I knew evil existed in all walks of life, I knew that the country was struggle to correct financial decisions that had left millions unemployed.  What had I been doing while Famine ran amuck, uncontrolled and unthreatened.  I quickly hid this self doubt before he could realize his words had struck a blow.
“And don’t get me started on your modern day agriculture, one word for you Defender… Monsanto.”
I rolled my shoulders and bent my knees attempting to refocus myself to the task at hand.  Enough of this, I didn’t come her to chat.  “Well congratulations, I was going to let you slink back off to hell, but you’ve convinced me to kill you.”

Something Extra:
Rhonda Plumhoff, the cookbook author of Literary Chocolate, A Second Helping, created these two recipes for Aneesa Price’s characters, Caroline (from Finding Promise) and Miss Suzette (from Coffin Girls):
Chocolate Mocha Crème Brulee
Caroline had led the life of a high society daughter and wife, one that was filled with soul-destroying emotional abuse. Upon the death of her husband, she finds that she is financially incapable of supporting herself and flees New York without a plan or destination in mind. Her travels lead her to Promise, a small town on the New England coast.
Following instinct, she settles in Promise and begins to explore her new found independence and the pleasurable side of love with ruggedly handsome local, Luke Edwards.
Her financially privileged upbringing had provided her with the opportunities to travel and with her love for cooking; she shares culinary delights from all over the world with the willing residents of promise. But her new-found contentment is shattered as past resurrects itself and she needs to find the courage to face it before she can truly re-build her life.
Ingredients
  • 2 3/4 cups heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup prepared espresso (strong black coffee)
  • 8 egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, for topping
Directions
Preheat the oven to 325° degrees. Place 8, (6 ounce) ramekins on a baking sheet.
In a heavy sauce pan over medium heat, add cream, sugar, vanilla and espresso. Stir to dissolve the sugar, and heat until cream begins to simmer. Remove from heat. Place egg yolks in a large bowl, and slowly whisk in the hot cream mixture, about 2 tablespoons at a time, until you have added approximately half the cream mixture to the yolks. At this point, pour in the remaining cream mixture and whisk smooth. Stir in chocolate chips, and let rest for 5 minutes. Stir the mixture until chocolate is smooth and creamy. Pour evenly into ramekins, cook for 30 minutes in preheated oven. Remove from oven and allow to cool for 45 minutes at room temperature. Refrigerate for 6 hours. Before serving; move the oven rack to the top position in the oven, preheat oven to broil. Sprinkle the tops of each Crème Brulee with granulated sugar, evenly coating. Place ramekin on baking sheet, and place under the broiler until sugar bubbles and turns a light caramel brown. Keep an eye on sugar it bubbles fast and you do not want it to burn. Serve immediately.
Yields 8 servings
Voodoo Chocolate Beignets

This endearing Voodoo, Cajun mama is a favorite character of many who read Coffin Girls. She rules the kitchen of Papillion Plantation, the majestic mansion of the witch-vampire sisters, with a wooden spoon and gruff affection. What’s more, she’s the human that grounds the powerful Coffin Girls and who encourages them to overcome the risky challenges that they face, including those that touch their magical hearts.
Miss Suzette is known for her Voodoo, or ‘kitchen magic’ but she is also a whizz with culinary creations believing that food replenishes the soul and nourishes the heart.
Ingredients
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup hot water
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Confectioners’ sugar for dusting
Directions
Before you begin to deep fry beignets, fill pan with oil until 3 inches deep, heat vegetable oil to 350° degrees in a deep heavy pot, over medium-high heat (or deep fryer).
Sprinkle yeast over warm water in a small bowl, stirring to dissolve. Let stand for 5 minutes. In a large bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, sugar, heavy cream, hot water, egg, shortening, and salt; stir in yeast mixture. Mix dough just until combined and smooth. Let dough rest in bowl, covered with a clean kitchen towel, 30 minutes. Transfer dough to a well-floured surface. Roll dough out to about 1/4-inch thickness and cut into 2-inch squares. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let dough rise in a warm, draft-free area, about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Fry beignets until golden brown, about 2 to 3 minutes, turning as soon as they brown on one side. Remove with tongs or a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain. While still warm, give beignets a generous dusting of confectioners’ sugar.
Yields 20 beignets

Excerpt:
Chapter One Ye Olde England
“Oh, Mr Boswel,” Anna sighed awkwardly, biting her bottom lip as he gazed seductively into her eyes. She placed her small-gloved hand into his and he smiled, but no words passed between them. The heady concerto played by the musicians faded into insignificance, the guests and all their formalities forgotten in the moment. He led her into an open hallway towards the larger of two grand staircases. She could hardly breathe. His dark-brown eyes were hypnotic and with every gaze they burned into hers. His jet-black hair fell in soft waves around his shoulders, while small curls drifted onto his forehead, which he had a habit of flicking back to reveal his face. And oh, what a face, with his chiselled jawline, high cheekbones and overly full lips, perfect traits complemented by a rich olive skin tone and pretty, near perfect complexion.
Anna had waited so long for this moment. She felt her legs trembling beneath her, hoping upon hope that they wouldn’t give way. Upon reaching the first floor, guilt descended upon her. She knew what she was about to embark on was wrong and that she’d be judged, but on second glance down the stairs, across the hall and through the arched doorway, she saw that those in attendance at the masquerade ball danced on and drank merrily, oblivious to their departure.
She wasn’t allowed to linger for long, as Mr Boswel’s firm grip pulled her slightly off balance and she stumbled wearily. Aware that the hour was late, her gaze wandered briefly before coming to rest on the ornate grandfather clock in its regal attire, situated equidistantly between the two staircases, both hands sitting comfortably on the number one.
Mr Boswel’s eyes held a warm reassurance as he led her across the landing towards a large oak door. “After you, madam,” he gestured, opening the door.
“Thank y’ sir,” she uttered nervously.
Why me? Anna thought to herself as her conscience juggled with reality, still questioning why he had given her the time of day. With his good looks and his status, he really could have anybody he desired. On close inspection, Anna knew she was anything but beautiful; even as a child, her mother referred to her as plain. It wasn’t that she had a bad face, just not an overly pretty one; her eyes perhaps too small, their colour quite insignificant – somewhere between light blue and grey – and strawberry-blonde hair scraped back rather severely in a bun. There wasn’t anything dynamic about her features either; even her nose had a slight tilt to the left – a flaw nobody else would have picked up on.
Then the door closed behind them and they were alone at last, away from unwanted roving eyes. It was a moment she’d longed for, for what seemed like an eternity.
She found herself in a large bedchamber, a four-poster bed made from a deep rich wood taking centre stage, its precise carvings inlaid with gold leaf in large spirals. Warm red silk drapes, not quite scarlet, perhaps a shade or two deeper complemented the bed. The room exuded wealth, with its deep-mahogany furnishings, high walls and numerous gilt edged portraits.
Anna felt lost in her new surroundings.
“Well, Anna…”
She jumped, and her eyes were drawn once again towards the handsome Mr Boswel, who had already removed his shoes and was now reclined on the bed, propped up by two thick cotton bolsters. His long taupe waistcoat was draped untidily over a padded-back chair, and she watched tentatively as he started unbuttoning his linen shirt to reveal a toned physique.
“Join me,” he murmured, his voice soft and inviting.
Her heart was beating so heavily in her chest as she made her way over to the bed that she was sure he’d be able to hear. She was even tempted to hold her breath. He leaned his body forward towards hers as she sat nervously on the edge of the bed. She knew he was going to take her, and although she felt way out of her depth, she wanted him so very badly. He smelt so fine, his broad chest brushing against her arm; she could feel the soft hairs between his nipples, and then their hardness.
She was burning inside as he ran his fingers longingly over her body. She felt his breath, then his lips, tenderly at first as they began caressing the nape of her neck, and then with an urgency, a hunger, the tenderness turned to lust. Their lips met for the first time and he pulled her body roughly onto his, quickly loosening the bodice of her gown and starting to untie the lacings of her corset…

“Anna,” he whispered, a husky lilt to his voice.
“Mr Boswel…” were the only words to leave her lips as they lay lost in the moment, wrapped in each other’s arms.
“Stay here with me tonight.”
“Sir, I’ll be tellin’ y’, I’m betrothed to another,” Anna replied, shedding tears of guilt while darting around the room, recovering her garments.
Mr Boswel sighed. “An unfortunate predicament in which you find yourself, my dear,” he said, lifting himself slightly and leaning the weight of his body on his elbows, looking at her earnestly while she dressed.
“Mr Boswel, yer reputation precedes ye.”
“Perhaps, Anna, but they are just empty conquests.”
“All but one, sir.” Anna paused, awaiting his response, but the words she longed for were not forthcoming.
“This I cannot deny, but I would be grateful if you were not to mention her name. She is now but a ghost from my past.”
“I must take yer leave, sir. I’ll be missed.” Fear grew in her voice. “Mr Boswel, I ain’t gonna live a life with ye as me guilty secret.”
“Well, Anna, that’s all I have to offer you. At this present time you must be patient… I…”
Anna interrupted him before he could continue. “Please, sir, I beg of ye, say no more. I think it best I bid ye farewell.”
With that, she walked out of the room and out of his life, sure that he was watching until she closed the door.

Kasadya: Hellhound Twisted (Book #2 of the Kasadya Series)

She fought against all odds and became the warrior she was meant to be … or so she thought. In a world where the rules have changed, can she embrace her destiny and become the hellhound she was meant to be?

Kasadya is back in Exsilium and finds her world a little different. Her half-breed fallen friends join her, and they are ordered to complete their apprentice training in order to obtain the right to be guardians. She must learn that her own fate cannot be denied and that others are set to follow. But most of all, she must learn that to trust is the greatest battle of all.

The tables are turned and Kasadya is put to the test. Will she be able to prevent her own death, or that of a friend? Or will her actions call forth the destruction of Earth and Exsilium?

For a Phoenix to rise, it must first die. —Chax De Luca

Excerpts -
“Do you serve because you want to gain access to Heaven? Or do you serve because you want to, because it is in your heart to?” I challenged them, and silence greeted me. The few eyes that had shown aggression now looked to the earth, shamed at the conclusion of my challenge. They serve themselves, for their own cause. They are not here because their hearts tell them that this is the right thing to do.

“These humans are out there every day, fighting to eliminate the demons, and they do this because they want to. They do this because it was their free willed choice to do it. You speak about honour and love, yet all of you are only doing this for yourselves!” I was pissed off, talk about hypocrites!

“Just breathe through it,” Chax tried once more. But my breathing wasn’t slowing down and my normal vision was almost non-existent. What a final moment. Here in the cold with my Custos, no final glory, no grand exit, just us in a deserted place. Suddenly a pain shot through my wing and I screamed in agony. Confused, I looked at the wing, and then at Chax and froze. He just broke my wing, the pain rippling up to my back and into my spine. Shocked and suddenly afraid I looked at him, “Now breathe,” he instructed and I did.

I lay there, pinned beneath him, and started to try and control my breathing. He was watching me intently, his eyes boring into mine. “That’s it,” he said after a few minutes. “Take back control, this is how you will fight it, this is how you will live longer.” I felt heat on my left cheek and then felt it become ice cold, stopping just below my jaw. The same was happening on my other cheek. Tears, I felt my tears. Angry that I would be so weak in front of the one person I wanted to prove myself to, I pushed him off me and got up in super speed. Walking away from him, I wiped the now frozen tears off my face.

“Oh wait, I didn’t tell you about this part. So he was looking at the waterfall, then he stepped on to the top and looked down to try and see me. The next thing he slipped and fell in, and I do believe he was cursing in Russian.” I looked at Kali and we started laughing all over again. But clearly Max didn’t approve.

“I did not slip, you shot me with a light bomb and then I fell into the water,” he rectified the facts.

Nanini turned around on her butt and looked at him. “Yeah, can you prove it, Godzilla?” she taunted him.
